The Silence of God
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
Psalm 22:1-2 (ESV)
In his song “The Silence of God, Andrew Peterson writes:
It's enough to drive a man crazy; it'll break a man's faith
It's enough to make him wonder if he's ever been sane
When he's bleating for comfort from Thy staff and Thy rod
And the heaven's only answer is the silence of God
Have you ever, after considerable prayer and crying out experienced the silence of God? I believe there are times in the Scriptures where people experienced this silence – search the Word – can you find any?
Did Jesus experience the silence of God? Peterson goes on to write about a time when Jesus may have experienced the silence of God. Two instances where Jesus might have experienced the silence of God were in the garden, and on the cross.
What have you done in those times when God has seemed silent when you sought His answer? How did you feel? Did it challenge your faith and sanity as Peterson suggests? It would be wise to see what Jesus did in both instances – He continued to cry out to God and pray.
Keep the faith. Press on. Don’t lose heart. Ask your brothers and sisters close to you for prayer. Keep praying! In spite of the silence, the Lord cares for us, and loves us.
