Many of you have argued over this old question, “If a tree falls in a remote forest and there’s no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?” And of course the young, intelligent university student will insist that it certainly does not, “Sound is created by vibrations. These vibrations cause the human eardrum to also vibrate which the brain then interprets as sound. If no ear picks up the sound then you have no sound — only vibrations.” Who can argue with this logic? The older, wiser person will inevitably turn to God as an answer, “But God is present everywhere and certainly hears everything. He hears the tree fall; therefore, it makes a sound.” Which also seems like the correct answer. So maybe everyone who’s ever engaged this question is actually correct?
I’ve been reminded lately of God’s continual presence in all our lives. He hears every tree fall down in the forest and sees every sparrow fall. Proverbs 15:3 states “The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good.” Now, I think that we all “know” this, and yet somehow we fail to marvel that GOD, THE CREATOR OF ALL THINGS, KING of THE UNIVERSE knows everything in our lives and sees and hears all that we do and think. This thought can fill us with both terror and comfort. It is comforting to know that God is with me in all situations and gets me out of all kinds of scrapes. At the same time, it can be terrifying to know that He sees and hears all of the things that we do in secret that we don’t want anyone to know about. What emotion stirs in your heart at the thought of God knowing everything about you? Are you filled with comfort and joy or are there areas in your life that need to be confessed, repented of, and cleansed by the blood of Christ?
