Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
[1 Timothy 4:7-8 (ESV)]
Training is typically the first active part of something we participate in – athletes train for marathons, fights, gymnastics, football games, etc. Training to do other activities is also important. We should train, or practice, to be good at our hobbies and interests – hunting, fishing, piloting a private plane, knitting, or drawing just to name a few. Training is usually the first thing we do at a new job. Training is undoubtedly a part of our lives, no matter our age. Children even train for things like riding a bike.
How do we train ourselves for godliness, which Paul indicates is critical in this life and the next? Training for godliness should probably include consistent Bible reading, fervent prayer, accountability, and faithful, committed involvement in a body of believers. This list just scratches the surface of training for godliness. So, how are we doing? Have we placed any value on training for godliness? Let’s ask God to help us train for godliness, and I believe He will do that!
