For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
[Psalm 62:1-2 (ESV)]
In this Psalm, David wrote about a time of great trouble, danger or distress. He wrote about being physically and verbally attacked. Nevertheless, David’s response shown in today’s passage displays great faith and trust in God.
David believed several key truths that we should pay close attention to and learn from. David waited, in silence, on God. David didn’t try to quickly devise a back-up plan. He waited on God because he trusted in God. He didn’t run to someone else who might be able to bail him out of whatever situation he faced. He waited on God, and God alone.
Adam Clarke points out that David acknowledged having God for His rock—a strong fortified place. He trusted God for his salvation—continual safety. He trusted God for his defense—his elevated tower, which placed him out of the reach of his enemies. Finally, David says I shall not be greatly moved — I may be shaken, but cannot be cast down or permanently destroyed.
We’ve likely all been in some situation of great distress or danger in our lives. How did we react? Did we attack? Did we retreat in fear? Did we doubt or question whether or not God was with us? Did we trust God as our rock, our salvation, and our defense? How about in the future - can we trust God such that we can wait on God alone – even though we may be shaken?
